Idea

Scan the real, populate the virtual

Real to Virtual — the HP portal ecosystem: a scanned figure surrounded by camera rigs and drones

Real to Virtual — the HP portal ecosystem

Scan anything real — people, objects, whole spaces — and bring it into the virtual.

Concept work with the HP experience-design team on a family of scanning portals. The purpose was full-textured, high-resolution capture — from small objects to full bodies and whole spaces. From a step-in demonstrator tower down to a desktop scan plate; concepts from 2019, never built, shown exactly as designed.

The ecosystem

One portal family
The portal ecosystem — scan rigs and a drone circling a standing figure

Rigs and drones — capture from every angle

The portal ecosystem — floor stands and lamps arranged around a person

From floor stands to lamps — scanners, large and small

The demonstrator

Step-in portal
Body scanner demonstrator concept — a step-in portal tower with light columns

Step in, light up — modular build, collapses flat-pack

The team

All projects are always team work. The Palo Alto team asked me to help elevate the early functional prototypes towards pitches to the executive team. I built those prototypes out into a grander vision — one that showed the potential for a roadmap around 3D scanning.

My idea: HP is essentially a portal from pixels to ink — and it could extend from any scan to voxels. HP as the portal between real life and virtual workflows would complete the full-service offering.

Molecules to Matter was the identity platform I proposed, built on HP's fluid-dynamics essence; the HP brand-identity team then grew it into a full identity system.

I joined that team to understand and help expand their working prototypes into an HP strategic-roadmap pitch — from sketches, to renders, to a quick visual of the whole suite. This is my happy place.

This project was designed in a team dynamic with the HP experience-design team.
