When testing the world became urgent, every touch, tray and cap had to earn its shape.

A human-factors brief for HP's rapid mass-scan diagnostics, 2020. The dilemma: contamination. So the work started with lab operators — garage trials with painted fingers to reveal every touch, bench flow studied in VR before a part was made — and led to point-of-care concepts that move testing towards home.

The virtual workbench

Virtual garage pipetting testing. During the lockdown, before we could enter the labs, we had to choose the angle of the display. A rapid build of the virtual workbench let us pick a solid angle.

Given the FDA rules for diagnostics device design: as long as you state what you are going to test, and how you will test it, a validation can become an approved part of the FDA process.
